Rice is a staple in our household. My family enjoys eating a bowl of fluffy white rice with just about anything! My grandmother taught me how to cook rice in our Asian rice cooker. On family road trips, my grandmother had a fresh pot of rice in the rice cooker and she made sure we didn’t leave home without it. We would enjoy rice and whatever cooked meat and hard–boiled eggs she had packaged. As a kid, I always thought it was weird that my grandmother would go to all the trouble to cook rice. But, now I understand that it was one of her ways of showing love. Rice is love.
It wasn’t until recently that I realized my rice cooking game needed a boost. My mom who was visiting observed how soggy my rice turned out when I used my Instant Pot. While the top layer was delicious and fluffy, the middle layer was soggy, and the bottom layer was overcooked. My rice was in a sad state and she said she would buy me a dedicated rice cooker. I decided to take matters into my own hands and research the perfect rice cooker for my family — and I found one!
I love this small rice cooker from Amazon. It can cook rice for up to six people. The design is compact and doesn’t take up a lot of space on my counter. I also love that the lid flips open, facing you instead of on the side. When I used it for the first time, it created the most fluffy white rice! My husband and children commented on how good the rice looked and tasted. I followed the manufacturer’s tips of soaking the rice 20 minutes beforehand for extra tasty rice and to stir the rice all around the pot as soon as the rice was cooked, to ensure that it doesn’t discolor and stick. You have to fluff the rice and I didn’t know to do that immediately after the rice is done.
Another thing that is helpful with cooking rice is having a raw rice storage container. I love this rice storage container because not only does it store a lot, the shape also fits well in your pantry. Plus, the pink rice drainer + food colander is a must-have in making rice. It attaches to your bowl and drains out the dirty water when you clean it, preventing rice from spilling out. Coolest invention ever!

Although my Instant Pot did its job cooking rice for years, it wasn’t the kind of rice I remember eating as a kid. I really don’t know why it took me so long to recognize this and do something about it. There has been too many countless times we had a pot of rice that was not worth salvaging. I thought it was user error (perhaps not adding the right amount of water). But, sometimes you gotta have the right tool to get what you want. I am so glad my mom talked about buying a dedicated rice cooker. Now, making rice is even easier and not to mention, tastier! Investing in a dedicated rice cooker is worth it — just make sure to find one that is right for you. For me, a small but mighty rice cooker was exactly what my family needed.
P.S. How beautiful is this serving bowl from Williams Sonoma? It just the right size for my crew and the design is stunning! I received this from the lovely people at South Coast Plaza x Fleurs de Ville event. It means so much to me.
