This past weekend, my husband Albert completely surprised me with a romantic anniversary trip to Solvang, California—a charming Danish-inspired town tucked into the Santa Ynez Valley. We were celebrating 23 beautiful years of marriage, and his thoughtful planning made every moment feel extra special.

Whether you’re planning a couples’ escape, a family-friendly adventure, or a solo retreat, Solvang is a gem worth visiting. Here’s a look at everything we did—and a full itinerary of things to do if you’re headed there soon!
Day 1: Scenic Views & Danish Hospitality
We started our drive from Southern California and took a breathtaking detour to Cachuma Lake. The vista points along the way are absolutely worth the stop—peaceful, serene, and photo-worthy.

When we arrived in Solvang, we checked into the elegant Hotel Corque, centrally located in the heart of town. The hotel was stunning—modern but warm, with a touch of Danish charm. Our room was ready with the sweetest surprise: a heart made of rose petals on the bed and a box of chocolates to welcome us. I immediately knew this trip was going to be something special.

I couldn’t wait to film and share footage of our beautiful suite, especially the spa-style bathroom with its gorgeous lighting and sleek design.

For dinner, we walked over to Fitzpatrick’s Tavern, one of the few places open late. The atmosphere was lively and casual, and the food hit the spot. I ordered the tender short ribs, and Albert had their famous Reuben sandwich—both were delicious.

Day 2: Food, Fun & Danish Sweets
We had a slow, relaxing morning before heading out for lunch. Ironically, we craved Mexican food in the middle of this Dutch town, so we went to Don Nachos. I had the taco salad, and Albert had taquitos—everything tasted homemade and satisfying.

Next stop: shopping therapy. I discovered the most adorable dress shop called May Designs. Their collection of feminine, romantic pieces had me swooning. I picked up a dress I can’t wait to style and share.

For an afternoon snack, we stopped by the popular Mortensen’s Danish Bakery. I went with an éclair, and Albert got a creamy pastry. We also brought home a plate of cookies for our family to enjoy. This bakery is a must-visit for sweet lovers!

We wandered into Mystic Merchant, a hidden gem filled with crystals, incense, and spiritual tools. If you’re into energy work or just love browsing mystical finds, definitely stop by.

https://www.ostrichlandusa.com/In the afternoon, we revisited one of our family favorites: OstrichLand USA. It’s quirky, fun, and unforgettable. For just $1, you can feed the ostriches and emus using a pan—but be warned, they’re hungry and enthusiastic! Keep your fingers clear and don’t wear anything they might mistake for food!

That evening, we freshened up for a romantic dinner at Bit O’Denmark, one of the oldest restaurants in town. The candlelit setting, warm service, and authentic Danish menu were the perfect way to end the day. I had the Hakkebøf med løg (Danish-style ground beef steak with onions), and Albert ordered a hearty Monte Cristo sandwich. Both were amazing.

Day 3: Souvenirs & Sweet Goodbyes
On our final morning, we stopped into Gerda’s Iron Art Gift Shop, a lovely spot filled with handmade décor, wind chimes, pottery, and gifts. I picked up a couple of keepsakes for home.

Still craving something sweet, we made our way to Old Danish Fudge Kitchen, where we sampled and took home a few pieces of melt-in-your-mouth fudge.

Before heading home, we had one last meal at Craft House at Corque, a modern eatery located at or next to our hotel. The food was exceptional. I had the Korean Beef Salad and Albert went with the Hot and Spicy Chicken Sandwich. The best surprise? Our amazing waiter brought out a plate of fresh, fluffy beignets to celebrate our anniversary. It was the perfect way to end our trip—sweet, thoughtful, and delicious.

A Romantic Getaway to Remember
This anniversary trip was more than a vacation—it was a reminder of how love, thoughtful gestures, and shared adventures keep a relationship strong and beautiful. I felt so celebrated, and I’m grateful for this time to reconnect, reflect, and create new memories.
